Book for July

After looking through everyone's suggestions, it's going to be difficult to find a book that not everyone has read. But I picked one for the first month that someone recommended to me a long time ago. It looks really good--similar to the books Holly, Tami, and Kristen wanted to read. It's The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. Here's the summary:

"Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons in the Book of Genesis.
Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoil of ancient womanhood--the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of her mothers--Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah--the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that are to sustain her through a hard-working youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate, immediate connection.
Deeply affection, The Red Tent combines rich story-telling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women's society."

I'm almost positive you can buy the book at Target and definitely at Borders or Barnes and Noble. Or even online... the options really are endless :) And I think we should plan on having it read by the end of July? And as far as August goes, let's plan on reading I Captured the Castle by Doty Smith.
There you have it. I'm looking forward to some very stimulating conversations :)

The Idea

So Kristen, Melanie, and I decided last weekend that we should start an online book club for all of the women in our family. We were standing in the book aisle at Target (where else does inspiration come) when the idea came. We realized that if there's one thing we all have in common, it's a love of good books.

So here's how it will work: everyone will choose a book and submit it via a posting on this very blog. It can be anything you choose--for young adults or regular ones, anything from non-fiction to mystery to romance. Keep it relatively simple, considering that the pace for all isn't equal. We'll randomly choose a book for each month and let you know in advance what it will be. Then, around the 15th of the month, we'll start discussing in earnest. We'll wrap up discussion on the thirtieth. Also, the person who's book we read will be in charge of coming up with some discussion topics.

Our first book club will be in July... so that gives you about a month to read it. Start thinking about your book selection and post it here or email it to mmpowell@gmail.com.

Hopefully this will work... and be fun... and more importantly, keep us all connected!
